Trio Bravo +

Alexander Aschenbrunner, HiFi Stars, Dez. 2011-Feb. 2012

Trio Bravo+ have a unique sound, it starts off as a chamber quartet plus friends performing music with a chamber group feeling, but then it mixes Jazz, Kletzmer, Balkan and Gypsy influences, all mixed together with a David Lynch-style sensibility of plain weirdness. And after all that the music still sounds an invigorating mixture that leaves one thinking that they are listening to the soundtrack to a long lost eastern European silent movie. Trio Bravo+ have always had an idiosyncratic sound uniquely their own, and it is also a pan-European sound as well, the music holds little American influences - if any. The band have existed for fifteen years and this album, part retrospective and part new material, is the final one by the line-up listed here. Band leader and main composer Mark Chaet has decided to seek a different musical direction. Trio Bravo+ consists of Mark Chaet - violin, Giorgio Radoja - piano, Sergej Sweschinkij - double bass, Adam Tomaszewski - marimbas/drums, and guest musicians on various tracks: Zsolt Dombovari - cello, Bartek Miejnek - Kontrabass, Michael Joch - percussion, Maria Schneider - marimba, Sascha Gutmann - piano. The album contains nineteen tracks, many reworked from tracks on previous albums. They are: Hommage An Shanghai Nr 1, Darf Ich Bitten, Wiener Würstchen, Rondo Ukraine, Panzerkreuzer Potemkin, Paramela, Kiga, Ta-Ra-Ra, Troika, Montag, Trauriger Clown, Chanson Triste, Liebesleid, Fernes Irland, Punk, Hommage An Shanghai Nr 2, Pizzicato, September, Wolga-Flüsschen. And so this looks to be the final Trio Bravo+ album, at least sounding like this. A sad moment but also an intriguing one as we wait to see what the future brings. Still, this new album reflects the best of the band as it was, and it isn't too late for new listeners to tune into the marvellously inventive music of Trio Bravo+. Recommended to world music tourists

What I like is the combination of strong compositions, highly professional musical craftsmanship and a surprising mixture of styles. The musicians blend traditional elements from Europe, South America and other global places with jazz, classical theme’s and many other sounds. They change from slight bombastic circus music to sad and lonely piano solo parts. From tango influenced dances to ballroom virtuoso. And the good thing is, that they mix it in such a natural way that they create a unique Trio Bravo+ style which is recognizable, of the highest quality and very enjoyable.

The entire album can be summed up in one word: ausgezeichnet!
Matthew Forss, Inside World Music

Trio Bravo+ is a band that successfully marries the elegance of classical music with the folk essence of world music. Violin virtuoso Mark Chaet is the de facto frontman for the ensemble, lending his emotive string sound to a collaborative effort that includes Giorgio Radoja on piano, Sergei Sweschinskij on double bass, Adam Tomaszewski on percussion/marimba and Zsolt Dombovari on cello, among others. Their sound is a unique hybrid that bears a touch of Eastern European Gypsy spirit with elements of Jewish klezmer music, Western jazz and multi-cultural folk sounds. The mood varies from playful to melancholy, with a hint of grandeur in the mix of strings and piano. Comparisons to Nigel Kennedy are certain due to the band’s “ethnic classical” sound, though Trio Bravo+ manages to create a richer, more multifaceted sound.

The trio has blossomed into a larger ensemble featuring leader Mark Chaet on violin with Giorgio Radoja (p), Sergei Sweschinskij (b) and Adam Tomaszewski (perc, marimba). Several others join them over 19 selections. The music is a blend of classical, gypsy, folk and western jazz. It is jovial, spirited and playful...

The compositions are often structurally complex but never cold or abstract, and evoke many different emotions. The melodies are unashamedly beautiful without being sentimental or cloying.

Many tracks here exhibit the close arranging and discipline of a chamber group, while a few, such as "Wiener Würstchen," leave space for improvisation. All are played with great passion and sincerity, and fully display the group’s tremendous versatility. Trio Bravo+ shows that this group has a facility with so many different musical traditions, most of them exotic to American ears, that it is a treat to hear. The sequence of tracks results in an enjoyable balance of slower, more contemplative numbers and more dramatic, driving music.
